The Cape Fear Jazz Society has a close association with UNCW and awards scholarships annually for students studying jazz in the Department of Music. To date, the CFJS has awarded 26 scholarships. The organization is also associated with the North Carolina Jazz Festival, which has featured UNCW jazz ensembles on opening night for the last 3 years.
This year, with corporate support from Lumina Station retailers Cecil + Beanie, Cameo 1900, and Gentlemen's Corner, the Cape Fear Jazz Society awarded scholarships to John Crowley and David Easton.
This year's scholarship fundraising concert, held on April 29 at UNCW's Beckwith Recital Hall, featured the UNCW Big Band with special guest vocalist Andrea Owens.
