North Carolina had long been recognized for rich traditions in crafts, literature, historical drama and music when, by executive order in 1964, Governor Terry Sanford created the North Carolina Arts Council to strengthen North Carolina's creativity, invention and prosperity.

The North Carolina Humanities Council serves as an advocate for lifelong learning and thoughtful dialogue about all facets of human life. It facilitates the exploration and celebration of the many voices and stories of North Carolina’s cultures and heritage.

The Humanities Council develops among North Carolinians an understanding of and appreciation for the humanities that can transform the way they see themselves and their communities.

North Carolina Jazz Festival

 

The North Carolina Jazz Festival was started in 1980 by Dr. Harry Van Velsor, a local dermatologist and consummate jazz lover. Today, the festival continues the tradition of bringing superb jazz artists to Wilmington.

Bellamy mansion museum

 

The Bellamy Mansion is one of North Carolina's most spectacular examples of antebellum architecture. Now a museum, the Mansion offers tours, changing exhibitions and an informative look at historic preservation in action.
